  ►    Mechanism of Drug Drug Interaction :  Many drugs interact with radio-iodine; mechanisms vary but can affect protien binding, pharmacokinetics, or the uptake of iodine-131. Licensed product information recommends that the following drugs be withdrawn before use of sodium iodide (131I): Antithyroid drugs e.g. carbimazole, thiamazole, propylthiouracil, perchlorates: withdrawn 2 to 7 days before use and withheld until several days after use. Salicylates, corticosteroids, sodium nitropusside, sulfobromophthalien sodium, anticoagulants, antihistamines, antibacterials: withdrawn 1 week before use. Iodine-containing preparations for systemic use such as vitamins expectorants: withdrawn 2 weeks before use. Iodine contaning preparations for topical use: withdrawn 1 to 9 months before use. Iodine-containing contrast media: withdrawn up to 1 year before use. Thyroid hormone preparations: withdrawn 2 to 6 weeks before use.
